Installing a VPN on iPhone and Android: step by step
Unlike an eSIM, a VPN doesn't need a QR code, you simply install an app. Still, a few settings differ slightly between iPhone and Android.
Installing a VPN on iPhone
- Download the app from your chosen VPN provider via the App Store
- Log in with your account, or create one if you don't have one yet
- The first time you connect, iOS will ask permission to add a VPN configuration, confirm this
- Pick a server location and tap connect
Installing a VPN on Android
- Download the app via the Google Play Store
- Log in or create an account
- On first connection, Android shows a pop-up requesting permission to set up a VPN connection, allow it
- Pick a server and connect
Practical tips after installation
- Turn on 'auto-connect on unsecured wifi' in the app's settings, the exact name varies by app (for example Auto-connect, Always-on VPN, or Trusted networks), so you don't forget it on hotel wifi
- Test the connection at home before you leave, so you know how the app behaves
- Check whether your VPN has a kill switch, which automatically cuts your internet connection if the VPN drops unexpectedly
- Update the VPN app before departure, so you're not stuck needing a new version while on the road
- Keep in mind that an active VPN slightly increases your phone's battery use, how much depends on the protocol, your signal strength and how heavily you use data, so only enable auto-connect on public wifi if battery life matters to you
