Internet in Sri Lanka: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained

From the tea plantations in the hills to the surf spots along the coast, Sri Lanka is compact but varied. Here's what you need to know about internet while traveling.

Roaming with your own plan

Roaming charges for Sri Lanka are high for most European plans, a local solution is cheaper.

Local SIM or eSIM?

Local SIM cards are available at the airport, but arranging an eSIM before departure saves time on arrival at Colombo Airport.

Costs

Budget €10 to €20 for a two-week data plan.

Do you need a VPN?

Sri Lanka has, in the past, temporarily restricted social media during periods of unrest. A VPN can help keep communication apps accessible then, though it's no guarantee.

Practical tips

  • In the hilly tea regions (Ella, Nuwara Eliya) coverage can be weaker than along the coast
  • PickMe is the local equivalent of Grab or Uber and essential for transport
  • During monsoon season (May-September or October-January depending on the coast), a stable connection helps
