Internet in Spain: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained
As an EU citizen, Spain is one of the easiest destinations for internet, but things look different for non-EU travelers or longer stays. Here's what you need to know.
Roaming with your own plan
Traveling with a plan from an EU or EEA provider, your own plan usually already works for free thanks to EU roaming rules. Non-European plans face regular (often high) roaming charges.
Local SIM or eSIM?
For EU citizens, a separate SIM or eSIM is often unnecessary. For non-EU travelers or digital nomads staying longer, a local eSIM with a bigger data allowance is often cheaper than buying daily plans.
Costs
For EU citizens: usually free within your existing plan. For non-EU travelers: budget €10 to €20 for two weeks.
Do you need a VPN?
Spain has no internet censorship, a VPN isn't necessary but is useful for accessing your own streaming catalog or extra security on public wifi in tourist centers.
Practical tips
- Check whether your own plan already includes free EU roaming before arranging anything else
- Spain generally has strong 4G/5G coverage, including the islands (Mallorca, Canary Islands)
- For longer stays (digital nomads), a local eSIM with a bigger data allowance is often cheaper than roaming
