Internet in Mexico: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained
In cities and popular beach towns, mobile internet is generally fast and reliable. Off the tourist routes, in parts of Chiapas or Oaxaca for example, coverage can be considerably more limited.
Roaming with your own plan
Mexico isn't covered by EU roaming rules. Traveling with a Dutch or Belgian plan means roaming charges can add up fast, check with your provider before you leave. (Some US and Canadian plans already include Mexico.)

Local SIM card

Telcel has the widest coverage, including in smaller towns outside the tourist zones. In the Riviera Maya (Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen) coverage is excellent, in rural parts of Chiapas or Oaxaca less so.
Do you need a VPN?
Mexico has no internet censorship, so a VPN isn't necessary. Resort and hotel wifi in tourist zones like Cancún is a known target, always use the official app and two-factor authentication for banking, a VPN protects your connection but not against phishing.

- Expect less signal on bus journeys between tourist regions
