Internet in Malaysia: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained
Malaysia consists of two parts that differ quite a bit in travel experience and coverage: the peninsula and Borneo. Here's what you need to know about internet on the road.
Roaming with your own plan
Roaming charges for Malaysia are high for most non-Asian plans, a local solution is cheaper.
Local SIM or eSIM?
Local SIM cards are widely available, but an eSIM is quicker to arrange and works on both the peninsula and Borneo.
Costs
Budget €10 to €20 for a two-week data plan.
Do you need a VPN?
Certain content is occasionally restricted in Malaysia for religious or political reasons. A VPN with a server in your home country usually fixes this, and is also handy for browsing safely on the go.
Practical tips
- On the peninsula (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi) coverage is excellent and fast everywhere
- On Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak) coverage drops off noticeably outside the cities, especially on diving and jungle trips
- Grab works well for transport and food in the major cities, on the islands options are more limited
