Internet in Latin America: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained

A trip through several Latin American countries usually means crossing borders regularly. Here's what you need to know about internet on a multi-country trip like this.

Roaming with your own plan

Roaming with a European or American plan is expensive for most Latin American countries and doesn't always work across borders either.

Local SIM or eSIM?

Buying a new local SIM at every border gets tedious. A regional eSIM plan often covers dozens of countries in a single profile.

Costs

Budget €20 to €40 for a regional data plan of two to three weeks, depending on how many countries.

Do you need a VPN?

A VPN is mainly useful for safety: hostel and bus station wifi varies widely in quality and security between countries, and you'd rather not handle banking on an unfamiliar network without protection.

Practical tips

  • Check the coverage map per country within the plan, not every provider covers Central America as well as South America
  • WhatsApp is the regional standard for communication, factor this into your data use
  • In high-altitude areas (Mexico City, the Andes) coverage can be slightly weaker than at sea level
