Internet in Japan: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained

Japan is one of the best-connected countries in the world, but how you get online differs quite a bit from home. Here's what you need to know about roaming, local SIMs, eSIM and VPN for a trip to Japan.

Roaming with your own plan

Non-Asian plans rarely offer favorable roaming rates for Japan, expect high costs if you use your home plan without any extra arrangements.

Local SIM or eSIM?

Local SIM cards are less common for short-term tourists in Japan, many shops require a local address or a longer-term visa. An eSIM sidesteps that entirely and is therefore the practical choice for most travelers.

Costs

A two-week eSIM plan for Japan typically costs between €15 and €30, depending on the data amount. That's usually far cheaper than roaming on your home plan.

Do you need a VPN?

Japan has no internet censorship, so a VPN isn't necessary. It can be handy if you want access to your own streaming catalog from home, or for extra security on public wifi at, say, train stations.

Practical tips

  • Pick an eSIM plan that runs on docomo, au or SoftBank, the three major networks
  • Shinkansen wifi is often slow, rely on your own data instead
  • Reserve enough data for maps and translation apps, especially outside major cities
