With an EU or EEA plan, your own plan usually already works for free. Non-EU travelers face regular roaming charges.

Local SIM or eSIM?

For EU citizens, a separate solution is often unnecessary. For non-EU travelers or busy tourist periods, a local eSIM is still worth it.

For EU citizens: usually free within your existing plan. For non-EU travelers: budget €10 to €20 for two weeks.

Do you need a VPN?

Italy has no internet censorship. A VPN is mainly useful because public wifi at busy stations and tourist squares is a known target for insecure networks.

Practical tips

• Check whether your own plan already includes free EU roaming before booking an eSIM
• Major cities and the north generally have the strongest 4G/5G coverage, remote parts of the south can be weaker
• Around popular landmarks (Colosseum, Vatican City) the network can get busy during peak times
