Internet in Indonesia: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained

From the buzz of Bali to quieter islands further out, Indonesia is an archipelago where coverage can vary by island. Here's what you need to know about internet while traveling.

Roaming with your own plan

Roaming charges for Indonesia are high for most European plans, a local solution is almost always cheaper.

Local SIM or eSIM?

An Indonesian SIM card generally works across the whole country, so you don't need a new one per island. An eSIM is still more convenient since you skip hunting for a shop.

Costs

A two-week data plan typically costs between €10 and €20, Indonesia is one of the more affordable destinations.

Do you need a VPN?

Indonesia has no structural blocks on common Western services, a VPN is optional and mainly useful as a backup on unreliable coworking wifi.

Practical tips

  • Telkomsel generally offers the widest coverage outside tourist hubs
  • Coworking wifi in Bali can be unreliable, keep an eSIM as a backup
  • Coverage varies between islands (like Gili or Lombok) if you're island-hopping, check ahead
