Internet in Greece: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained

As an EU citizen you usually already travel to Greece with free roaming, but things can look different on the smaller islands. Here's what you need to know.

Roaming with your own plan

With an EU or EEA plan, your own plan usually already works for free. Non-EU travelers face regular roaming charges.

Local SIM or eSIM?

For EU citizens, a separate solution is often unnecessary. For non-EU travelers or longer island stays, a local eSIM is a good fallback.

Costs

For EU citizens: usually free within your existing plan. For non-EU travelers: budget €10 to €20 for two weeks.

Do you need a VPN?

Greece has no internet censorship. A VPN is mainly useful because free wifi at tavernas and smaller island accommodations is rarely well secured.

Practical tips

  • Check whether your own plan already includes free EU roaming, for EU citizens that's usually the case
  • On smaller islands like the Cyclades, coverage is more variable than on the mainland or in Athens
  • During peak season (July-August), networks on popular islands can get congested
