Internet in Canada: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained
Canada is enormous, and coverage outside major cities isn't a given. Here's what you need to know about internet during a trip across Canada.
Roaming with your own plan
Roaming with a non-North American plan is usually expensive for Canada, check in advance whether your provider offers a specific Canada or North America plan.
Local SIM or eSIM?
You can buy a local SIM from major carriers, but an eSIM is quicker to arrange and often works across the border if you continue on to the US.
Costs
Budget around €20 to €35 for a generous two-week data plan, especially for road trips with heavy navigation.
Do you need a VPN?
Canada has no internet censorship, a VPN isn't necessary but is handy for accessing your own streaming catalog or extra security on hotel wifi.
Practical tips
- Rogers, Bell and Telus have the widest coverage, but even they have gaps in remote areas
- National parks like Banff and Jasper often have no signal, download offline maps in advance
- If you're also crossing into the United States, check whether your eSIM plan works across the border so you don't need to switch
