Internet in Argentina: roaming, eSIM, local SIM and VPN explained
From the cosmopolitan streets of Buenos Aires to the empty plains of Patagonia, Argentina is a country of vast distances. Here's what you need to know about internet while traveling.
Roaming with your own plan
Roaming with a non-Argentine plan is usually expensive, a local solution is cheaper.
Local SIM or eSIM?
A local SIM is available, but arranging an eSIM before departure saves time, especially if you're heading straight to remote areas.
Costs
Budget €15 to €25 for a two-week data plan.
Do you need a VPN?
Argentina has no internet censorship. The economic situation does make travelers extra vulnerable to phishing around currency exchange transactions, always use a VPN for these on public wifi.
Practical tips
- Buenos Aires and other major cities have strong 4G coverage, this drops off quickly the further south you go into Patagonia
- Long bus journeys (say, to El Calafate or Ushuaia) often pass through areas with no signal
- Apps for tracking the unofficial exchange rate are popular, and these need a stable connection to work
