The 10 biggest mobile internet mistakes travelers make abroad
Most internet problems while traveling are avoidable with a bit of preparation. Here are the mistakes we see most often, along with the simple fix for each.
The 10 most common mistakes
- Not disabling or checking data roaming for your regular SIM before departure, so your device can unexpectedly use mobile data through your home provider as soon as you arrive
- Waiting until after arrival to install an eSIM, which can be tricky without a stable internet connection, install it before departure instead
- Buying too little data for a long trip and having to top up later at a higher rate
- Not downloading offline maps, when coverage often drops in national parks or remote areas
- Assuming every device supports eSIM without checking beforehand
- Handling sensitive things like banking on unsecured hotel wifi without extra protection, at minimum make sure you have a properly secured connection and up-to-date software, a VPN adds extra privacy on top of that
- Deleting your eSIM's activation details right after scanning, some providers let you reuse or reissue a QR code, but this varies by provider, so keep them just in case
- Forgetting that some apps, like banking or streaming, actively block VPNs instead of allowing them, causing login failures
- Having no backup plan if the eSIM or VPN stops working, such as a second provider or a physical SIM card as backup
- Only checking mobile costs afterward, instead of choosing a clear data plan upfront that matches the length of the trip
One common extra data drain that doesn't fit neatly into the list but is worth mentioning: automatic backups and updates. Photos uploading to iCloud or Google Photos, app updates, and laptop backups over your hotspot can burn through a data plan in a single day. Turn off automatic updates and large cloud uploads over mobile data if you're on a limited plan.
Most of these mistakes take five minutes of preparation to avoid. Spend those five minutes before you leave, and you won't have to think about internet again for the rest of the trip.
