How to install an eSIM on Android and iPhone
Installing an eSIM usually takes a few minutes, as long as you follow the right order. Here's the step-by-step route for both iPhone and Android, plus what to check beforehand so you don't get stuck halfway through.
Before you start
- Preferably use a stable wifi connection, your device needs internet to download the eSIM profile
- Have your provider's QR code or activation code ready, usually sent by email
- Confirm your device isn't carrier-locked with your current provider
- Install the eSIM before departure if you can, while you still have a reliable connection, so you're not stuck without internet on arrival
Installing and setting up an eSIM on iPhone
- Go to Settings > Cellular (the exact menu name varies by iOS version) > Add Cellular Plan
- Scan your provider's QR code, or enter the activation code manually
- Follow the on-screen steps and give the plan a recognizable name, like 'Thailand trip'
- Under 'Default Line', choose which SIM to use for data
Installing and setting up an eSIM on Android
The exact menu varies by brand (Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and so on), but broadly you'll go to Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet) > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Then scan the QR code or enter the activation code manually, just like on iPhone.
Common mistakes
- Trying to install an eSIM without an internet connection, this usually fails
- With many providers, an eSIM QR code can only be used once, keep your activation details safe or check in advance how your provider handles a reinstall
- Forgetting to enable data roaming for the new eSIM, on almost all travel eSIMs this actually needs to be on, since you're connecting through a partner network
- Assuming your old SIM switches off automatically, in practice both often stay active until you choose which SIM handles data, calls and texts
