How much data do you need while traveling? eSIM plans explained
The biggest pitfall when choosing an eSIM plan isn't buying too little data, which is annoying because you have to top up, it's buying too much, which just wastes money. Here's a practical rule of thumb by traveler type.
What actually uses data?
- Navigation apps like Google Maps: roughly 5-20MB per hour, depending on active navigation, traffic info and pre-cached maps
- Mostly-text messaging apps: barely anything, much more with lots of photos and videos
- Streaming music or podcasts: roughly 50-100MB per hour, depending on the audio quality you choose
- Video calls: roughly 300MB to 1GB per hour, depending on the app and video quality
- Scrolling Instagram or TikTok: can reach 500MB-1GB per hour or more with lots of short videos
Rule of thumb by trip type
- Weekend trip or city break: 1-3GB is usually enough if you're mainly navigating and messaging
- Two-week holiday with average use: 5-10GB
- A month or longer as a digital nomad with video calls and work: consider 20GB or more, or an unlimited plan
- Backpacking with lots of photo and video uploads: budget generously, 15-20GB per month
Guideline by type of use
- Just WhatsApp and Google Maps: 1-3GB
- Checking social media daily: 5-10GB
- Watching or streaming lots of video: 15-20GB
- Remote work with video calls: 20-50GB
Tip: not every GB is equal
Providers handle your data limit differently: some enforce a hard cutoff once you hit the limit, others throttle speed after a fair-use threshold, and others simply let you buy more. Check this in advance, a throttled connection is usually more pleasant than a hard cutoff. Hotspotting (sharing with a laptop or tablet) doesn't use more data by itself, but a laptop typically uses more data than a phone due to background updates, cloud sync and heavier websites, so your plan runs out faster once you share it.
